As a department we are driven to ensure that all pupils leave Abersychan School equipped with the mathematical skills that will enable them to make informed decisions in their everyday lives.
The department uses a variety of teaching styles to engage and enthuse all pupils in their learning and are committed to giving every pupil the best opportunities to achieve their full potential.
The department is very well resourced including interactive whiteboards in all classrooms and laptops available for use for all pupils. Pupils are given numerous opportunities throughout the year to use ICT to enhance their mathematical understanding.
Pupils are encouraged to be independent learners in mathematics and are given opportunities to investigate and develop their own strategies to solve problems and apply skills to real life situations. They are also expected to present solutions and project work to their peers.
The department also offers numerous extra-curricular opportunities to help support and stretch pupils. These include:
- Numeracy support in Key Stage 3
- UKMT Maths challenges (Junior and Intermediate)
- Mathematics team challenge (Junior and Intermediate)
- University of Glamorgan Mathematics Masterclasses (Year 9 and 10)
- Edgehill challenge (Year 9)
