Languages

At Abersychan School, our Languages curriculum celebrates the power of communication and the richness of cultural diversity. Through the study of Welsh and French, students become confident and curious communicators. Our curriculum fosters pride in heritage, openness to the wider world and global awareness.

Welsh language learning strengthens students’ connection to their national identity and culture. They develop fluency in listening, speaking, reading and writing, gaining confidence and a sense of belonging in a bilingual Wales.

French introduces students to a global language spoken across continents. Students explore the customs, values and daily lives of French-speaking communities, building practical communication skills and intercultural understanding.

Across both languages, students are encouraged to take risks, experiment with language and express themselves creatively. They engage with authentic texts and media, developing empathy, critical thinking and linguistic agility.

Our curriculum supports the transfer of skills between languages, helping students recognise patterns and deepen their understanding of how language works. Language learning extends beyond the classroom, enriching students’ experiences across the curriculum and preparing them to thrive in a multilingual and interconnected world.

We aim to embed a lifelong love of languages, respect for cultural diversity and the confidence to engage meaningfully with others; locally and globally.
