Abersychan School has three primary schools within it’s cluster. These are Cwmffrwdoer Primary School, Garnteg Primary School, and Blaenavon Heritage VC School. The allocation of student placement at Abersychan School is arranged by Torfaen Local Authority.
Abersychan School has excellent relationships with its primary school cluster. Schools in the Abersychan Cluster have a joint transition plan which outlines the strategy to ensure curricular progression and pastoral continuity between the primary and secondary phases. Colleagues across the cluster have co-constructed a curriculum that enables progress for all children, across a learning continuum. The Abersychan Cluster invests heavily in professional learning and innovative collaboration in considered curriculum design, through a structure founded on the six Areas of Learning and Experience. The cluster has exploited unparalleled opportunities provided by the Curriculum for Wales framework to secure consistency in advancing pedagogical approaches. This approach is supported by a comprehensive transition programme that prioritises academic progress, inclusivity and wellbeing. The work of the Abersychan Cluster has been identified as excellent practice by Estyn and the school was requested to present the Abersychan Cluster strategy during a recorded Estyn Conference in December 2024.
The transition programme for Years 4, 5 and 6 includes visits by students to Abersychan School to sample a variety of learning experiences and meet with staff, an Open Evening at Abersychan School and curriculum projects. In the summer term, Year 6 children and parents / carers visit Abersychan School to meet key staff. The welfare, happiness and educational progress of the child must be paramount in the transition process. In recognition of its excellent transition programme, the Abersychan School won the prestigious “Welsh Schools Secondary Award for Work in Transition”.
