Buddies: Ffrindiau

Abersychan School is highly committed to developing the literacy and numeracy skills of all of our pupils.

Buddies is one of our key intervention strategies, used to further promote the reading and numeracy skills of Key Stage 3 pupils. The Buddies sessions are held during registration, twice a week for literacy and twice a week for numeracy.

This involves the younger Buddy (Yr7-9) reading to an older Buddy (Yr11) or being supported with some numeracy work.

Literacy Buddies is run within the library so that learners can choose from our well-equipped and diversely stocked array of reading materials. Year 7 read on Mondays and Tuesdays while Year 8 attend on Wednesday and Friday.

Numeracy Buddies is run in Room 1 where there is lots of space for interactive work between our Buddies. Year 7 numeracy buddies meet on Wednesdays and Fridays while our Year 8 Numeracy Buddies meet Monday and Tuesday. This has been timetabled so that learners could attend both groups if needed.

Buddies is an extremely successful programme that has been running for several years, contributing to developing not only the reading and numeracy skills of our young people, but also their confidence and self-esteem. In fact, many of our volunteer older buddies were themselves young buddies who benefitted from the programme and are now developing their supporting and coaching roles.
