Risk Week

The week commencing 19th June saw Abersychan launch its first ever ‘Risk Week’. The aim of the week was for both staff and pupils to come out of their comfort zones and try something different in the classroom (outside in some cases). The range of activities ranged from pupil led activities, Tai Chi, Jenga, dance offs (Montagues against the Capulets), using playdoh to explore ‘Macbeth’, a skills carousel, a treasure Hunt in Welsh and pupils teaching a lesson with very little staff input.

An ICT lesson saw pupils taking a computer apart and then learning how to put it back together. Even though the pupils felt it was a tough challenge Sam Bastow Sheeran said “I will look forward to lessons like this as it gives a hands on experience on how a computer works……the lesson really helped me”.

Mr Evans (Head of History and Geography) taught a silent lesson and let the pupils lead. Caitlin Marsh and Lowri Weeks said ‘The lesson went really well. We became more independent due to Mr Evans not being able to tell us what to do. We really enjoyed the lesson and it had a great impact on the class. We look forward to more pupil led lessons and Mr Evans being silent’. Mr Evans also enjoyed the experience and even though was a little apprehensive at first said “I LOVED IT! The atmosphere in the class was calm and purposeful, the pupils enjoyed and engaged with the concept, taking more responsibility for their learning”.

The ‘Risk Week’ was a great success and just shows that both teachers and staff are up for a challenge at Abersychan. Both pupils and staff look forward to even more ‘active’ lessons where pupils take on a more active role and become ‘lead learners’.
