Harry Potter Trip 2018

On Wednesday 16th May 2018, a group of 44 Year 9 pupils visited the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London as part of their Art & Design studies.

As pupils are currently making the big decision of what to study at GCSE level, this was an excellent opportunity to see what career paths are available in the creative sector. Pupils began their visit by taking part in a workshop where they had the opportunity to study the design processes and level of detail required to design and make props, costumes and sets in a film. Using world famous costumes, carefully crafted props and intriguingly designed white card models, students were taught the secrets of the art department and film making by professional designers who worked on the film sets with the likes of Daniel Radcliffe himself!!

In the ‘costume design’ workshop, we had the opportunity to study costumes from the Harry Potter film series and how the Costume Designers work to distress garments according to the character's storyline (Miss Jones got very excited about being able to touch Ron Weasley’s outfit from the Dealthy Hallows film that he wore). Pupils then had to breakdown authentic fabric from the Harry Potter film series, using a range of professional distressing tools.

In the ‘graphic design’ workshop, we focused on the artwork and props from the Harry Potter series and learnt how the Graphic Designers manufacture props that are carefully made to reflect the scenes and settings in which the magical stories unfold.  The opportunity then arose to create their own card model of a prop from the movie.

We then had time to explore the Studio Tour at their own pace. We drank Butterbeer, boarded the Hogwarts Express and crept through the Forbidden Forest hoping to not wake Aragog. Wandering up through Diagon Alley, we visited Olivander’s and many pupils had their first taste of Wizarding life and left with wand in hand.

All pupils were exceptionally well behaved and a real credit to themselves, their families and the school.  We all left as Muggles and returned as Witches and Wizards.

Please see the below link which will take you to the gallery section to show some of the pictures that were taken on the trip.
