Duke of Edinburgh (Practice Walk - 09th July 2018)
Yesterday pupils in Year 10 from Abersychan School involved in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award completed their practice day walk. The pupils met at 8:30 AM ready to leave for a short bus trip to Abergavenny. The planned route started in Abergavenny town and pupils had to navigate using maps, compasses and route cards up to the summit of the Sugarloaf Mountain. The Bronze group were divided into three smaller walking groups and rotated roles such as navigation, timings and carrying a fully stocked expedition rucksack. The weather conditions proved very challenging yesterday with temperatures as high at 28 degrees. Pupils had to ensure they drank plenty of water to keep well hydrated on the hike to the summit. A huge well done to all the pupils who completed yesterday’s walk and they are now fully prepared for their qualifying expedition in September.
