British Style Collective Clothes Show

On Friday 7th July, 2017, Miss Jones of the Art and Design Technology Department took a group of 25 pupils to the British Style Collective clothes show in Liverpool with the help of Miss Monks.

In September 2017 we have a brand new and exciting course starting at Abersychan; Fashion and Textiles Design and this was an excellent opportunity to see what career paths are available to our pupils in the creative sector. Pupils began their visit by attending a Fashion Design seminar hosted by former editor of i-D magazine, Caryn Franklin. The setting for the seminar was a rustic, disused warehouse that was transformed into a ‘Raw Catwalk’. We learnt all about the process of design from concept to manufacture. We were lucky enough to have a sneak preview of graduate fashion show collections from Liverpool John Moores University. Our pupils left the seminar feeling inspired and motivated knowing what could be in store for them after life at Abersychan.

In the ‘Recycled Imagination’ workshop, we had the opportunity to study a variety of different fabrics and view creative garments made completely from recycled materials. Whoever knew we could use Ikea shopping bags, hair rollers and Starbucks coffee cups could be used in such a way?!

We then moved on to complete a live fashion illustration workshop with renowned fashion illustrator Kitty Fuller. Set in an outdoor garden, we had the opportunity to be models and illustrators. It was refreshing to celebrate all shapes, sizes and body types.

Our final workshop of the day was a fashion technology session where we learnt how SMART materials can be used in the design industry. We looked at garments that had LED lights built in, thermochromatic fabrics and there was even a show being 3D printed as we watched the show!!

The final part of our day was an explosive journey through the world of fashion, dance, latest trends and catwalk all combined with live music acts in an hour long, show stopping spectacle in the Echo Arena.

Pupils then had time to explore the Echo Arena at their own pace. With over 300 of the biggest online brands and high street names in fashion and beauty many pupils had their first taste of the designer life and left with sketchbooks and shopping bags in hand.

All pupils were exceptionally well behaved and a real credit to themselves, their families and the school.  We all left feeling inspired, motivated and excited about
