Big Pit Visit

Mr Thomas and Miss Lloyd of the History Department along with Mrs Jay and Miss Wilson took 45 Year 8 pupils to Big Pit. The pupils had been studying child labour and the coal industry as part of their investigation to life in Wales during the industrial revolution, so this was an excellent opportunity to bring those studies to life and experience the life of a trapper. The pupils toured the drift mine and the pit head baths before going underground to experience life as a miner. I think all agreed that working conditions for the miners were far from pleasant, especially the conditions endured by young trappers who would have only been 5 years old! All of the pupils were glad to see the sun again and head to the miner’s canteen for a well-deserved lunch! Several members of the public also commented that the pupils were extremely well behaved and a real credit to the school.
