Auschwitz Trip (Sunday 15th July 2018 - 18th July 2018)

Mr Evans and Mr Thomas of the History Department, Mrs McFarlane of the RE Department, ably assisted by Mrs Davey from the Art Department took 40 Year 10, 9 & 8 pupils to Krakow in Poland to gain a better understanding of the Holocaust in WWII. Pupils were able to visit a Jewish Synagogue and see the sites of the old Jewish Ghetto that was established by the Nazis between 1941 and 1943. We were lucky enough to meet a Holocaust survivor who told us how her parents gave her up for adoption before they were sent to a Death Camp. The most moving part of the trip was visiting Auschwitz, where 2 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis between 1943 and 1945. The pupils were incredibly moved to see the collections of Jewish belongings stolen by the Nazis before entering an actual gas chamber. It was heartening then to visit Oscar Schindler’s factory, which protected thousands more Jews from ending up in Auschwitz. Pupils also enjoyed visiting a Polish salt mine and experiencing authentic Polish food and culture. It was a very emotional but worthwhile visit. The pupils’ maturity and sensitivity was very impressive.

Please see the below link which will take you to our galleries section for some of the pictures that were taken during the event.
