Abersychan School Annual Prize Evening 2014

Abersychan School’s Annual Prize Evening

Thursday 9th October, 2014

Pupils, staff and invited guests celebrated our Annual Prize Evening on Thursday 9th October, 2014.  Awards were presented to our top achieving pupils currently in Year 11 as well as celebrating the incredible successes of our outgoing pupils.  This group of pupils built on the success of previous years and once again achieved record breaking examination results in August. A record number of our pupils achieved the Level 2 threshold and for the second year running, the Maths and Science results were record highs for the school.  All pupils who attended our school left with a recognised qualification.

The evening was opened by Head Girl, Trixica Kapdee.  Trixica welcomed pupils, parents, staff, guests and two special guests, former Welsh Rugby Internationals Nathan Thomas and Iestyn Thomas.  Nathan congratulated all our pupils on their outstanding achievements and both he and Iestyn present the pupils with their prizes and certificates.  Nathan and the Headteacher, however, did have a difference of opinion on what the outcome of the forthcoming Rugby World Cup competition would be!!

The musical entertainment for the evening was provided by the winners of the end of year school Talent Show.  The performances were of the usual high standard with Alivia Yemm, Kivelli Meadows and Ellie Whittaker performing Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”.  This was then followed by Alivia Yemm, Kivelli Meadows returning to the stage with Lorna Symmonds to perform their own arrangement of a song medley called “The Mash Up”.

Highlights from our current Year 11 were Lewis Hancock who received six subject prizes for academic achievement, a subject prize for progress, a Form prize award and one of the two Outstanding Pupil awards; Katie-Loiuse Hale picked up the other Outstanding Pupil Award along with the Poetry award; our 100% attenders from this year group were Ryan Athay, Casey Baldwin, Lewis Daniels, Harvey Davies, Ieuan Day, Catherine Flemming, William Harnett, Morgan Lilly, Sian Metcalfe, Nathan Nelson, Natasha Shadbolt and Aimee Mayo.

Highlights from our outgoing Year 11 pupils, included the following prize presentations:

  • Sam Watkins the Terry Morgan Sports Personality Prize;

  • Shannon Miller the Trevethin Memorial Prize for Attendance;
  • Hayley and Lauren Gilbert the Pontypool Rotary Club Service Above Self Award;

Leila Thomas and Chloe Bright shared the TeacherActive award for Outstanding GCSE/BTEC Results – a very proud moment for them and a very proud moment for the school.

We also recognised the outstanding results of our past pupils who undertook their Post-16 educational studies at other establishments.  The outstanding Vocational Education Students were Thomas Edwards (Coleg Gwent, Usk Campus) and Emily Blackmore (Coleg Gwent, Pontypool Campus).  The pupils with the outstanding GCE ‘A’ levels students were - Olivia De Sousa Costa (Coleg Gwent, Cross Keys Campus), Tomos Evans (Caerleon Comprehensive School) and Christopher Barne (St Alban’s RC High School).  Congratulations to them all.

Our Head Boy, Lewis Hancock, concluded the evening by thanking guests and congratulating all our successful past and present pupils.  Trixica and Lewis then presented our outgoing Head Girl and Boy, Leila Thomas and Jared Rosser, with a memento of their time at Abersychan School.

Staff and Governors would like to wish all our pupils, past and present, good luck on the next leg of their learning journey.
